3 out of 5 stars Not Bad   April 1, 2008
Stuart Floyd (New York, NY)
It's ok, does what it is intended for but just not for me as I realized I won't use it and had little interest in getting involed in the many features it has but to someone who is financially inclined and does allot with there money and needs organization and or connecting accts and tax stuff this may be good for you.

1 out of 5 stars very buggy   November 8, 2007
Craig T. Zabell (NY USA)
I've been using Quicken for many years. While I like the interface, it has been getting more and more buggy just about every year. The 2007 version is the worst I have used so far. And their technical support is not good at all. Eventually they may help solve a problem, but it's only after many tries.
Also if you are getting the premier version because of the investment management there's 1 bug they already told me they cant (or wont) fix. When you try to drill down into your asset allocation to understand a certain asset class, it always includes the cash asset class along with the one you really are trying to look at.

1 out of 5 stars Turn and Run   October 14, 2007
Chester S. Mclaughlin (Yakima, WA)
I've used Quicken for years. The 2004 worked wonderful. Then, Quicken automatically shut down this year and forced me to buy an upgrade. I hate upgrades but I had to get Quicken 2007 since I had years of financial history. The 2007 upgrade sucks. Checks were reported as written to unknown parties. I thought somone stole my identity. Forget about asking Quicken for help. One day I spent four hours with my banker trying to figure out the problem. Calling Quicken is like calling the moon -- forget it, Quicken, don't just walk, run from this upgrade.

Quicken Premier has everthing that I need to stay on top of my Financial picture. The other products that Intuit makes may be better for more professional users but this works well for me.

Intuit continues its streak of terrible products, August 30, 2007
By E. L. Edsall - See all my reviews

I have purchased Quicken 2005, 2006 & now 2007. I should have learned; Intuit doesn't care about improving their products; just selling them. And, what you have a problem with their buggy softare? Get out you credit card and pay $29.95 to speak and listen (carefully at that because the person is in India - can you say impossible to understand on the telephone) and be told that the problem is with your file. Oh, wow great but I thought it was your software. The truth is it is the software; full of more bugs than a 10 day old animal. Don't take my word for it; look at the forums under quicken.com. Thousands of disgruntled users. Where are those class action lawyers when we need them!

Your 401k Account - An Annual Checkup
By Dee Marie

You probably perform a lot of tasks annually. Some of these tasks protect you, your family, or even your assets. These chores include visiting your doctor for an annual physical or cleaning the gutters on your house. Well, next time you're making your list of 'must-do's' be certain to include a checkup for your 401(k) plan on your list.

Your annual examination of your 401(k) plan should cover a few different aspects of your investment. You can check each one quickly by exploring your most recent account statement.

First, you should evaluate your contribution amount. Changes in your financial position over the past year could warrant an increase or decrease in the amount you put into your 401(k). Receiving a raise at work is a great occasion to increase your retirement contribution. Changing your contribution amount isn't what matters here; it's taking the time to decide if you should make a change.

Next, you should take a look at your investment choices. A mutual fund that was outperforming its peers at this time last year may have tanked over the last twelve months. Although it's important to remember that you don't want to change your investment allocations too often, a regular examination of the funds you've chosen isn't excessive.

Finally, you should check on the way your investment options within your 401(k) are spread. Investing in four mutual funds, you might decide to put twenty-five percent of your account into each fund. However, if one fund grows more aggressively than another, at the end of the year you may have forty percent in one fund, ten percent in another, and twenty-five percent in each of the remaining two funds. Since financial experts sometimes advise that retirement accounts should be spread among many different types of investment, you may want to rebalance your account back to your original allocations of twenty-five percent in each fund.

Making changes to your 401(k) plan isn't something that should be taken lightly. Speak with your financial advisor if you aren't certain about the direction you should be taking. Regardless of the actions you decide to take, you'll feel better about your retirement plan after taking care of its annual maintenance.

Retirement Facts

In the private sector, participation by type of retirement plan has largely reversed over the past quartercentury: 'Traditional' defined benefit pension plans were dominant in 1979, but have been overtaken by defined contribution (401(k)-type) plans. The share of workers who are in both a defined benefit and defined contribution plan has remained fairly constant over the years.
